We had a client purchase two corn hole trophies for his event at the end of July 2014. There are a number of trophy suppliers in the world, but nothing quite like the ones that we make at JohnCanMakeIt.

I started out with basic ¾” pieces of wood, and cut them to size. I made the appropriate measurements for the hole location and used Forstner bits to make the hole all the way through. To give the appearance of a thin piece of plywood on the front, I used a much larger bit to bore out the back.

The tricky part is figuring out where the two centers would line up, so I took a small drill bit (1/16”) and drilled all the way through; this allowed for the tips of the forstner bits to center together to make the holes of the corn hole trophy.

Once the holes are drilled, it’s very basic after that. I took my DeWalt sander and made all the pieces smooth and ready for paint. After everything was prepped and ready to paint, I used Zinsser Cover Stain spray on primer (since it’s such a pain and waste to use the dip-in can and use up a foam brush) to layer on base coat.

I like to use oil based primers first on most projects I paint, since you can lightly sand once dry, and get an incredibly smooth finish afterwards, whether that’s oil based finish paint, or latex.

I sprayed a basic white spray paint over the primer (2 coats), and then used 3M Scotch Painter tape with a low tack to mask off the red triangle area, and also gave that 2 coats with a red spray paint.

On the base, I used a DecoColor Fine Line black paint marker to freehand the lettering request from the customer. I practiced a few times with laying out the lettering on paper, before going 100% finished on the actual base.

Once everything dried and cured, I took off all the tape, inspected for perfection, and then moved on to pre-drilling the bases for the screws that attach the top corn hole trophy to the base. I used my pre-drills to make my pilot holes which let the 1 5/8” screws seat perfectly from underneath. Job done!
